What Are The Performance Advantages of PEEK Material?

The performance advantages of PEEK sheet are manifested in the following aspects:

  1. High-temperature resistance: It has a melting point of 343°C and a glass transition temperature of 143°C. The long-term service temperature can reach up to 260°C, and the instantaneous use temperature can go up to 300°C. It hardly decomposes at 400°C for a short period. Its heat aging resistance is prominent. After being maintained at 250°C for 3000 hours, the bending strength remains almost unchanged.

  2. Mechanical properties: It possesses high tensile strength (above 90 MPa), high modulus of elasticity, high hardness, impact resistance, and creep resistance. Even at high temperatures, it can still maintain a relatively high strength. The bending strength at 200°C can still reach 24 MPa, and at 250°C, the bending and compressive strengths can reach 12-13 MPa. It is particularly suitable for manufacturing components that need to operate continuously at high temperatures. Not only is it strong and has a large modulus, but it also exhibits excellent toughness, impact resistance, creep resistance, fatigue resistance, etc. Its outstanding fatigue resistance to alternating stress is the best among all plastics and can be comparable to alloy materials. The comprehensive mechanical properties are superior to other thermoplastic resins.

  3. Wear resistance: The resin has outstanding tribological properties, certain self-lubricating performance, and a low friction coefficient. The wear rate is extremely low, and it has excellent resistance to sliding and fretting wear. Especially at 250°C, it still maintains good tribological properties, making it suitable for applications that require a low friction coefficient and excellent wear resistance.

  4. Chemical resistance: It has excellent chemical stability and shows outstanding resistance to various organic solvents, oils, weak acids, and weak bases. Apart from concentrated sulfuric acid, it is almost insoluble in other acids, bases, and organic solvents. Its chemical resistance is similar to that of nickel steel. It can maintain its strength over a wide temperature range and concentration. It is a polymer that is difficult to discolor, expand, or crack.

  5. Radiation resistance: The chemical structure is stable and it has excellent radiation resistance. It can withstand a radiation dose of 1100 mrad without losing its properties. It exceeds the general radiation-resistant material polystyrene and can resist gamma rays and electron beam radiation. These radiations are often used for sterilizing medical equipment.

  6. Hydrolysis resistance: It has excellent hydrolysis resistance and maintains a very low saturated water absorption rate over a wide temperature range. It can resist chemical damage caused by seawater or high-pressure steam. Even in a high-temperature and high-humidity environment, it will not hydrolyze. It can withstand more than 1500 steam sterilization (autoclaving) cycles at 134°C.

  7. Flame retardancy: The resin is a very stable polymer. A 1.45mm thick sample can meet the highest flame retardant standard without adding any flame retardants. The flame retardancy of PEEK reaches UL94 V-0 grade, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) is 35. It releases less smoke and toxic gas during combustion and has self-extinguishing properties.

  8. Electrical insulation properties: The polymer shows high volume resistivity and surface resistivity and can maintain good insulation properties over a wide temperature range and environmental changes. Within a wide frequency and temperature range, PEEK can maintain stable electrical properties. The dielectric constant is 3.2-3.3. The dielectric loss is 0.0016 at 1 kHz, the breakdown voltage is 17 kV/mm, and the arc resistance is 175 V. It can be used as a Class C insulating material.

  9. Biocompatibility: The material is non-toxic and is a biocompatible material. It is also the best long-term bone graft material certified by the US FDA. PEEK is easily compatible with the human body and can improve the success rate of medical applications, such as prostheses, stents, and other medical implants. PEEK implants do not cause harmful effects in the patient's body. Unlike metal implants, it will not release toxic metal ions or particles when corroded in the body, causing allergic reactions or toxic effects.

  10. Dimensional stability: It has a small coefficient of thermal expansion, and its products have good dimensional stability, very close to that of aluminum.

  11. Processability: Due to its good high-temperature fluidity and high thermal decomposition temperature, it can be processed by injection molding, extrusion molding, compression molding, blow molding, melt spinning, rotational molding, powder coating, etc., and is often used to produce components with complex geometries.
